天草の旅館 温泉 五足のくつ Villa ABy way of the sea which surrounds it, Amakusa has nurtured a connection with the rest of the world. Through the ages, things tangible and intangible were brought here from overseas and assimilated by Amakusa's inhabitants, helping to create a unique culture. In medieval times, it was a place of many a Japanese Christian's prosperity and grief. In the 20th century, it was the place where distinguished writer Kitahara Hakushu wrote the well-known collection of poetry called Jashumon. In Amakusa you will meet friendly, sensitive people, while landscapes of fishing villages nestled along the steep coasts overlooking the open expanse of sea will delight your eyes.

Reflecting its complex and rich history,‘Amakusa through the Centuries’is the theme expressed in Villas A/B. Amakusa is a special place not only in Kyushu or Japan; it is unique in all of Asia. Open the door to a pleasant and exotic stay in our beautiful islands.

“Amakusa's History and its Connection to the Sea”is the theme of Villas A. Mindful of the modesty of fisherman's dwellings of years past, the Villas' interior spaces are furnished simply. Looking out onto the garden outside, you can watch birds and butterflies play. The distinctive call of the Japanese nightingale or the summer cicada reaches your ears as sunbeams filter down through the forest canopy, bathing the world outside your window in gentle, mottled light. Every season casts the trees in new colors in this quiet mountain sanctuary.

Each of the six separate villas has a private outdoor bath fed by a natural hot spring, as well as an indoor bath. There are one-room, open concept villas as well as two story villas; we invite you to choose the one that best matches your preferences.

Slide open the shoji screen and let your eyes wander over the verdant Japanese garden, losing yourself in the evocative atmosphere of Japan's bygone years. Partake in the magical experience of watching the rain fall on the misty green landscape just outside.   In Amakusa, where Christianity was strictly prohibited for centuries, it is a custom to display a straw festoon over the front door throughout the year, signifying that the family is not Christian. In most of the rest of Japan, these festoons are only hung as a New Year's decoration.

Beyond the balcony stretches the sea. Beyond its horizon is another world. As it has done in the past, the sea will continue to connect Amakusa to the rest of the world, heralding the future of the New Amakusa.

Imagine a romantic sky and sea dyed madder by the sun as it slowly dips toward the horizon. Or a dramatic, deep blue midday sky with the East China Sea stretching out as far as the eye can see.

All four units are two-floor maisonettes. They all feature an outdoor bath with natural hot spring water as well as an indoor bath. On the second floor, there is a combined living room/bedroom which opens onto a balcony. There is a dining room on the first floor, so guests have the option of eating in.

At Tanmi Jashumon, guests can enjoy their meals in private rooms with windows overlooking the East China Sea. The meals are made with ingredients that come exclusively from Amakusa's mountains and sea. Kitaoji Rosanjin, a well-known and versatile Japanese artist and chef, pursued the idea of tanmi, a style of cooking where the subtle natural tastes of the ingredients are brought out without using excessive salt or spices. At Tanmi Jashumon, our chefs have dedicated themselves to follow in his footsteps to create exquisite dishes in the authentic tanmi style.

Guests should not hesitate to let us know about any food allergies or special preferences they may have; we will do our utmost to accommodate them.

Dinners are served between 6 and 10 P.M., and breakfasts are served from 8 A.M. to 11 A.M. Within these meal times, there is no need to book ahead; just come into the restaurant and eat at your convenience.

Our delicious meals are prepared from fresh local ingredients, and will add to the pleasures of your journey. We are sure their fine taste will complement your enjoyment of the beautiful and majestic scenery of Amakusa's West Coast.

We pay particular attention to the menu for those guests who stay with us for a few days or more, making sure that they enjoy the widest possible variety of meals. We think it is such attention to detail that has earned us a positive reputation among our repeat guests.

At Jashumon, take a minute to stroll down the unique 28-meter-long hallway. A likeness of the Virgin Mary gently looks down upon you while Gregorian chants softly resonate in the air. This too is Amakusa’s history.

The outdoor baths are fed by natural hot spring water from nearby Shimoda, a Village renowned for over 700 years for the quality and health benefits of its mineral springs. And if you let us know how hot you like your bath, we will adjust the water temperature so it is just right for you. Of course, the bath water is not recycled, so you may bathe with complete peace of mind.
